Founded in the epicenter of monster mule deer country, True Hunts is a foremost expert on opportunities to harvest big mountain deer. Cliff has been involved in the harvest of dozens of deer over 185″, many over 200″ and has spent years researching areas that can produce top quality bucks. We now offer what we believe to be the widest array of quality mule deer hunts you can find anywhere, with opportunities from Sept 1st through the Mid-December. Unlike most big mule deer outfitters, we have a wide variation in tag availability. Some of our hunts are easy to draw tags, some hunts come with a guaranteed tag and others require a minimal investment in a landowner voucher.

Most of our hunts are in Central and Western Colorado, but we also offer unique opportunities in British Columbia.

Our wilderness hunts are primarily operated through our wholly owned Colorado Outfitter, Flat Tops Wilderness Guides . We offer both lodge-based wilderness hunts and back-country camps. These are demanding hunts for big deer. Having some mental toughness, physical preparation, and being open to riding horses for long hours is essential. These hunts are not easy, but can produce deer that are typically only available on $15k+ hunts.

We offer a select number of private land hunts in Colorado that have comfortable lodging and utilize ATVs. These hunts can produce quality bucks and are a comfortable experience.

The British Columbia hunts are a hidden gem. We are still exploring new areas in BC and keep being surprised by the pockets of quality deer. The biggest advantage of BC is we can hunt bucks from velvet to late rut. BC promotes a “opportunity” based mule deer management system with insane pressure on their deer in accessible areas. Hence, hunters have to be open to the back-country type of hunt you would expect out of a sheep hunt. Long days, horses, and beautiful country.

Trip Leader Add-On Service for Groups/Corporate

True Hunts will add an additional full-time staff member to any hunt (outside of the hunt package guides/staff). These experts know the areas/species well, help guide hunters (where legal), deal with logistics of the hunt/travel, know professional taxidermy preparation and are an onsite resource to monitor quality control. This service is a huge plus for groups that don’t want to worry about the logistical details of a hunt or individuals that want that “edge” added to their hunt. *Call or email for pricing details.

Frequent Questions

  • Why do we hunt these areas?
    • If you open the pages of Boone and Crockett, it’s apparent that Eagle and Garfield counties have produced more massive deer than anywhere else on earth. That doesn’t mean they are easy to kill in our Colorado wilderness area, but it means there is no denying the possibility is there. Our wilderness hunt are in the epicenter of big buck genetics.
    • Our Private Land hunts are in areas that produce high quality deer, consistently. It’s almost impossible for one of these ranches to produce the behemoth deer we periodically harvest from the wilderness, but we have added them to our offerings because they are more consistent and less physically/mentally demanding hunts.
  • Which Seasons are best in Colorado?
    • The easiest time to harvest big deer in Colorado, private land and wilderness, is 3rd and 4th rifle season. Both of these seasons overlap with the mule deer rut. 4th season is during the peak of the rut in our high country area. Draw odds for tags reflect this preference
    • Mule deer can be successfully hunted during archery and 2nd rifle season, but hunters should understand they are in for a low density hunt. High country deer are spread across a massive landscape in September (during archery) and they heavily use timber as they stage for the rut in late October (2nd rifle season)
